Katie O’Connell, E-RYT and owner of Dragonfly Yoga Barn, is a fun-loving yogi known for eating copious amounts of dark chocolate, singing and jamming with her musical friends, snuggling with her 3 cats, 2 kids, and husband Declan, and can be found doing yoga in the mountain forest, on a rock, in a river, on the beach… anywhere! Katie has always been fascinated by dragonflies–their ability to transform, catch the wind, maneuver spirals and water dips with such grace, always shining irridescent in the sunlight, thus they have become our studio symbol.
Katie is an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT), has been practicing yoga for 15 years, and teaching yoga for over a decade. Katie has completed 500+ hours of study with Paula Tursi, Cora Wen, and Sudha Lundeen, and has studied Thai Yoga with Peter Kaaberbol, Sunny Klaber, and T’ai Jamar Hannah. Her greatest teachers of all are her students, her own children, and her husband and partner in everything, Declan, aka Dhadood.
Katie is also a certified Reiki II Level Healer and Thai Yoga practitioner, offering private appointments in front of the sun-filled windows facing the peaceful hemlock forest here at Dragonfly Yoga Barn.
Along with Co-Director of Vidya Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Training, Melissa Scagliarini, Katie is happy to offer 200 Hour certification to aspiring teachers. VVYTT is certified with the Yoga Alliance.
Melissa Scagliarini, E-RYT is a veteran instructor with over 10 years of teaching experience, including an in-depth 300-hr. training with the Himalayan Institute in India during the winter of 2010. Melissa is well-known in the Lakes Region for her dynamic Vinyasa Flow classes which combine sequences to build strength and physical awareness with a focus on breath and overall wellbeing. Melissa’s toddler, Lucian, keeps her busy in her “spare” time, and now that he is a two year old and on the move, her home practice often includes incorporating Lucian into the poses (very entertaining!) Melissa’s warm, good-natured personality paired with her challenging Ashtanga- inspired yoga classes are bound to leave you feeling grounded, energized, and well cared for in your practice.
Hannah Peaslee is a native to the woods of Sandwich, NH and was first introduced to yoga while studying at Quinnipiac University where she earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2009. Since graduating from the Vidya Vinyasa Teacher Training in May 2012 she has been sharing her passion for the Vinyasa Flow style which connects movement with breath to create an invigorating environment for her students. Hannah believes yoga should be fun as well as a commitment to discovering yourself in mind, body, and spirit. Expect classes to focus on alignment and to develop physical awareness from the inside out, while building strength and flexibility.
Betty Webster is a former guidance counselor who has been practicing yoga for over 12 years, and graduated from Vidya Vinyasa’s 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training program in May 2012. Betty lives in North Sandwich where she raised her three children, and she enjoys the peace and beauty of life in the mountains and woods of Sandwich, NH. She has been an EMT on the Sandwich Fire Department for 21 years, and also has a gardening business. Vinyasa flow, gentle yoga, Yin yoga, human anatomy, and the introduction and integration of yoga into daily life are of special interest to Betty. When she is not teaching yoga, Betty loves being outside, working in gardens, painting, and being with her family (especially her grandchildren!)
Rachel Burack still remembers her first experience with yoga. Over 10 years ago, she was always on the go and her sole form of physical exertion was through athletics and the gym. It was there she took her first yoga class, before the yoga craze really hit her hometown. “It wasn’t until many years later that I truly realized the power of that first yoga experience. That first day “on my mat” and all subsequent days after, being on my mat and practicing yoga gave me the opportunity to slow down, be present, breathe, and connect with my body, mind, and spirit. I’m proud to have been a student of the Vidya Vinyasa YTT, a journey that led me back to my very first yoga teacher, Katie O’Connell and a new-found mentor, Melissa Scagliarini. Now, as a teacher myself, I am passionate about being able to demonstrate to students that yoga can be practiced safely and holistically while having fun exploring the boundaries of our physical, mental, and spiritual self.”
Ruthann Horner grew up in Arizona where she discovered and fell in love with yoga 30 years ago. She completed her 200-Hour YTT with Katie & Melissa at Vidya Vinyasa in 2012 and believes her practice and teaching continue to make her a better version of her Self. With an M.S. in Nutrition, Ruthann is a “foodie,” passionate about cooking, integrated medicine, and alternative approaches to wellness. When she’s not on her mat teaching Vinyasa Flow or taking a delicious Restorative class, she can be found on the golf course, on her bike somewhere around the globe, hiking a White, or in the kitchen where she finds much comfort and peace. Ruthann joins us at our RDC program for summer residents of Rockywold-Deephaven Camps on Squam Lake.
Sandra McBourne: After years of practicing nursing and studying alternative health and healing methods with a casual yoga practice on the side, Sandra decided to dive into a serious yoga study. She is thrilled to have completed her 200-hour Vidya Vinyasa yoga teacher training in spring of 2012 at Dragonfly Yoga Barn. As a full-time nursing professor and busy mother of two teens, Sandra is excited to have the 8 fold path in her life and to share the mind/body principles of yoga with her students in the classroom and studio. In spring of 2013 Sandra started the journey to combine the love of the outdoors with yoga by completing a two -day teacher training in PaddleBoard Yoga. She now brings her practice to one of her favorite places-the water! Sandra lives in Holderness, and enjoys hiking and biking, and skiing in the White Mountains, and boating, swimming and paddling on Squam Lake.
